Have you ever heard the story of how elephants are trained? The short version is that they are tied...
When Things Fall Apart
So you say you want to achieve a goal or create something special in your life, you decide to start using mindset principles, listening to videos and audio, reading books on personal development and success, maybe even hire a coach. Everything seems to be going great but then all of a sudden it seems as if all hell breaks loose!!!
It seems like everything is falling apart all around and inside you. You seem overwhelmed, something is asking you, “why are you doing this, go back to what you were doing before”, you begin to have “issues” with people (physically or mentally), you feel like a fish out of water struggling for dear life. You begin to question yourself, “Why”, “What” etc.
At this point, many flee and abandon the goal, project, the coach, the program etc. They think this can’t be right and it shouldn’t be this difficult to achieve my goal. How wrong!
“It is said that the darkest hour of the night comes just before the dawn.” – Thomas Fuller
So what is really going on?
This can be explained in different ways:
- Healing – just like in the process of making gold, it is put through fire to get the impurities out. This is vital because we need to get rid of the trauma and its associated hurt to truly thrive.
- The Terror Barrier – a concept popularized by Bob Proctor. The Terror Barrier is the point where all hell breaks loose. When you begin to act upon a Y idea, the X conditioning begins to react and seeks to bring you back to homeostasis.
The self image is a cybernetic system that controls every area of our lives. Maxwell Maltz says “you can’t outperform your self image”. As a thermostat operates to regulate the temperature in a room, your self image resets your thoughts, feelings and actions to be within the set range.
Therefore attempting any form of growth, success, ambition higher than your current/past levels will result in a crash back to homeostasis.
When faced with this situation, use the guide below:
- Take a deep breath to calm your nervous system
- Remind yourself of your vision and your why
- Remind yourself of the truth of you – that you are more powerful than any condition, situation or circumstance, that you’re a spirit (limitless) having a human (limited) experience
- Journal your feelings and experiences
- Ask an empowering question – What is one thing I can do now towards my goal?
- Take inspired action on the idea that feels most expansive to you.
- Seek support and guidance from a trusted coach or mentor.
Remember when it feels like you’re in over your head, this is what it looks like when your dreams/goals are being achieved. Don’t retreat, don’t surrender. Keep going, you got this!
“The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.” – Joseph Campbell
